Join the Band

The Band of the Royal Welsh is Wales' very own Territorial Army Band, known nationwide as the band that play in front of tens of thousands of people at the magnificent Millennium Stadium at Welsh Rugby internationals. There is, however, more to this band's repertoire than meets the eye, and they are currently embarking on a recruitment drive to attract competent players to their ranks.
Many are mistaken into thinking that to become a member of this famous band, you will have to enlist in the regular army, however it is in fact a Territorial Army band, made up of local postmen, students, engineers, and company directors to name just a few. The band is unique in the fact that it is the only all-brass band in the British Army, and comprises of musicians from the fruitful Brass Band network from Gwent and Glamorgan.
The band is very busy and always in demand, whether it is on the concert platform or on parade as a marching band. The band has also played on many occasions for our own Royal Family, in particular H.R.H. The Prince of Wales, for whom they sometimes entertain at his Highgrove residence.
The band often travels abroad and have visited countries such as Belgium, Germany, Canada (twice), France, Jersey, and in 2007 toured Australia and performed in the world-famous Sydney Opera House.
We are a Territorial Army band recruiting brass or percussion players, both male and female, of at least Grade 5 (equivalent) standard from the age of 17 upwards. Daily rates of pay start at approximately £30 and rise to approximately £100. All rehearsals and band engagements are paid, including travel expenses and a bonus of up to £1400 tax free.
When the Band go on tour, all transport, accommodation, transfers and meals are paid for. Band members are also paid a daily rate of pay for every day they are away whether they have an engagement that day or enjoying a recreational day.
All band members are afforded the opportunity to participate in an Annual Skiing Trip which provides them with instruction, equipment, insurance and accommodation, flight costs and meals. This year's trip was held in Andorra, and to view photos click here.
We are well aware that many quality musicians see the Band at the Stadium and assume that it is a regular army band. The aim of this recruitment campaign is to make people aware that all the musicians in the band are semi professional, and have civilian jobs. We also have full time students who, as you can imagine find the extra income extremely helpful, and keep them from needing to work late and long hours in pubs, clubs and restaurants.
The Band rehearses at 7.30pm every Wednesday evening at Raglan Barracks, Newport. Experienced players are always welcome to join us for rehearsal. If you are an experienced brass player and want to get paid for doing what you enjoy or if you just want more information please contact Sgt. Ian Richards on 07813 987837 or click here to see how to get in contact via email.
